Just finished the new logo!
I just whipped it up today so I could have something snappier before pushing some publicity. So what about this colorful lookin bee? WHAT'S IT ALL MEAN!?
You probably weren't asking what it all means, but I'm the kind of person who likes to see meaning in every choice, whether it be in improv or a logo. The bee half of the meaning should be pretty straight forward...the school is called Hive. I admit that it may look a little more wasp-like than a bee, but the design is more attractive that way and anyway both species have hives so let's not fret about it.
What about the color? Is it an Africanized Bee?
Indeed, green, gold, and red are the flag colors of Africa, but they are also the flag colors of Los Angeles. I came to Berlin from Los Angeles and even though Chicago may be a more prominent metropolitan symbol of improv, Los Angeles is home to an unbelievable amount of great improv (possibly more--anyone want to yell at me for saying that?), it's home to a long list of improvisers whom I respect and care about, and it's where I learned to get on stage.
I would have liked to work in references to Chicago to point to Del Close and all the other greats who came out of that city (including the ones who are now in LA), but that would have been tough without making the logo very complex. Also, sorry about the irregular image sizes. I pulled these from other websites...
What about Berlin, you ask? Well, I did squeeze something small in there.
The bee is a skewed profile image that is facing the same direction as a certain bear you might know. The bee is also similarly outlined in white.
Okay, it's not a striking resemblance, but it's a reference nonetheless. First and foremost I wanted the logo to be pretty and readable. I think it does the trick for now.
